New proposals in the surprising Genoa centre
A plunge in the aquarium
The coast of the Eolie islands archipelago reproduced in an Aquarium Tank

There is something just as beautiful in Barcelona, something with a more ancient tradition in Montecarlo, something just as new in Sydney, but, in Italy, something so unique is only in Genoa, where the aquarium is continually expanding and every year something new is offered.
The Eolie islands Aquarium has been operative since Dec. 10th 2000. It reproduces the coast of the famous volcanic Sicilian archipelago. It contains a splendid wall of orange madrepore and a range of species typical of the Mediterranean Sea: the Rainbow Wrass, , the coloured Pavonina Wrass, the Sand Turbot, the Cardinal Fish.
This is the most recent initiative of an extremely successful project which is continuously offering new attractions. (Thanks to the automatic ticket centre) tickets can be bought in Genoa without
standing in a queue. Access to the pavilions is opened every half hour to avoid crowding, thus improve the quality of the visit. Tickets must be booked for schools or groups of more than 25 people. This can be done through the Aquarium website (www.acquario.ge.it). Guided visits can also be chosen.
Another initiative of the centre are the nineteen Tanks of The Great Blue Ship, which have been added to the existing 40 Tanks. This route lasts two and a half hours (one hour longer than it used to), and the total surface covered has increased from 7,000 to 9,400 sq. m. Close to the aquarium is one of the most recent and innovative museums in Genova, the Sea and Navigation Pavillion, where environment and real situations are reproduced by means of a strictly authentic range of materials, objects and finds.

Christmas at the cinema:
Films for all tastes

Six films are currently appealing to children, and five of them are cartoons: "Pokemon 2", "Babar, King of the Elephants", ""Princes and Princesses" are traditional cartoons; "Dinosaurs" has been made with digital processes, whereas "Chickenrun" is made with puppets. Any actors left? Yes, they haven’t disappeared. "The Grinch" features the polymorphous Jim Carrey. All of them are just beautiful.

Cities for children

What do cities offer children? A survey from the CNR research centre has tried to answer this question. The results show that our urban centres are depersonalised. Children want adequate lighting, slower cars, understandable road signs placed at a child’s height, pedestrian crossings, larger pavements, safe routes from home to school and telephones which can be reached by children.

Consumption is not the only subject:
a child dies every 3 seconds

Christmas holidays don’t mean only shopping. They can also represent for us a moment of reflection and UNICEF is helping us in this. This Christmas they have broadcast distressing information about children, victims of tragedy. In 1999 eleven million children below the age of 5 died, all of them of curable diseases. To understand this figure better we can specify that it corresponds to thirty thousand victims a day, 1270 every hour, one every three seconds. According to the UN fund for childhood, twenty million children were compelled to leave their homes and countries by surrounding wars.
